African Drumming Festival

African Drumming Festival 2016

For the last 11 years we have experienced some wonderful music-making with our South African friends. Evidenced work reflecting African cultures and traditions has been very useful for many schools when requested by Ofsted and, when taking Arts Awards.
This year we offered schools a single day option which, in the past has been both popular and provided excellent outcomes. Each daily programme provided 3 x 1 hour school based sessions in African Singing, Dance and Djembe Drumming, a full assembly performance and, a live staged performance to end the day.
This 5 day event was delivered to 1,500 children from St John's CE Primary, St Mary's Catholic Academy, St Kentigern's Catholic Primary, Blackpool Gateway Academy and, St John Vianney Catholic Primary School.
This was yet another unique event where African cultures and traditions were shared and music enjoyed.

Yet again this year's workshops and performances were outstanding, giving both pupils and staff not only a fabulous insight into African drumming, song and dance, but the skills to participate themselves. The performances were richly enhanced by the additional work pupils have undertaken as part of their wider, cross curricular work in schools. This was evident in the remarkable scripts and poetry which were written by pupils to provide a structure for their performance, in the dazzling display of costumes and masks which were designed and made by pupils, and through the research displayed in all performances, which showed maturity and empathy in pupils understanding of issues affecting Africa today.

Thank you to all the pupils and staff who give so much energy and time to make this annual festival a roaring success year after year!
